What does a Shiatsu treatment involve?
We will have the opportunity to talk about your treatment and we will discuss your lifestyle, diet and general health. I will want to know about any injuries and aches and pains.
I will ask you to lie down on a comfortable futon mattress and take some deep, slow, relaxing breaths.

Before and during your treatment, I consider the symptoms you are experiencing, and use a variety of techniques to improve your energy flow and get right to the cause of the issue.
Techniques may include gentle holding, pressing with palms, thumbs, fingers, elbows, knees and feet on the meridians, and more dynamic rotations and gentle stretching.
There are many accupressure points on the body, associated with the muscles, nerves, blood vessels, lymph vessels, bones and endocrine glands. Depending on your symptoms, I apply appropriate levels of pressure with the aim of addressing the cause of your symtoms.
Its similar to accupuncture- but without needles!
You will always feel relaxed with even the deeper pressure being firm and steady. In acupressure, as with most Traditional Chinese Medicine concepts, local symptoms are considered an expression of the whole body's condition.
Unlike Western medicine, which simply treats symptoms, Shiatsu seeks to discover any imbalances by focusing on the whole person - both body and mind.
Sometimes, the rebalancing and release of pent up energies during a Shiatsu treatment may trigger some emotional issues, and there may be feelings of sadness, anger or fear during or after a treatment. There can also be a feeling of lethargy because of deep-tissue work and the consequent release of energy, feelings, and emotions.
Shiatsu is dynamic, and I may suggest lifestyle alternatives that will help your healing, which could include dietary changes, lifestyle, environmental or attitude, in order for the healing to continue.
Guidelines for receiving Shiatsu
- Please wear loose, comfortable clothing
- Do not eat heavily for an hour before the treatment
- Do not drink alcohol before the treatment
- After the treatment drink plenty of water to smooth the flow of changes through the system
- If possible avoid strenuous or stressful activities after the session
